Überblick : Der Film erzählt die Geschichte von Javed, einem britischen Teenager pakistanischer Abstammung, der 1987 in der englischen Stadt Luton lebt. Inmitten der ethnischen und wirtschaftlichen Unruhen der damaligen Zeit schreibt er Gedichte, um der Intoleranz seiner Heimatstadt und der Unbeugsamkeit seines konservativen Vaters zu entkommen. Als ihm ein Klassenkamerad die Musik von Bruce Springsteen vorspielt, erkennt Javed in Springsteens eindringlichen Liedtexten Parallelen zu seinem eigenen Leben in der Arbeiterschicht. Jared entdeckt ein befreiendes Ventil für seine unterdrückten Träume und findet den Mut, sich in seiner ganz eigenen Stimme auszudrücken.
